Fans attending the 2026 FIFA World Cup will no longer be allowed to bring reusable water bottles into stadiums following a late policy change announced by FIFA.

The decision, made a week before the tournament begins on June 11, reverses an earlier guideline that permitted fans to carry empty transparent plastic bottles of up to one litre. FIFA said the ban, which also covers cups, jars and cans, is aimed at reducing the risk of injuries caused by thrown objects.

In a statement, FIFA said it remains committed to the safety of players, officials, supporters, volunteers and staff. The organisation added that water will be available for purchase inside stadiums at standard venue prices.

The move comes amid concerns about high temperatures expected at several host venues. FIFA said host cities will provide heat-mitigation measures, including hydration stations, misting areas, cooling tents and fans around stadiums.

Supporters’ groups have criticised the decision, describing it as a late and unexpected change. Some fans expressed concerns that the ban could increase costs for spectators and make it harder to stay hydrated during matches.

A similar restriction was enforced during the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.
