The Lagos State University (LASU) community is mourning the death of Otabor Boluwatife Joseph, a student of the Department of History and International Studies, who died from injuries sustained during a robbery attack in the Iba area of Lagos.

Boluwatife was reportedly attacked alongside some friends by suspected armed robbers on May 29, 2026, near the university campus. He suffered severe injuries and was rushed to a hospital for treatment.

In a statement, LASU described the incident as a tragic loss and expressed condolences to the student’s family, friends, and colleagues. The university said it immediately activated emergency support measures after receiving reports of the attack.

Vice-Chancellor Professor Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello extended her sympathies to the bereaved family, assuring them that the institution shares in their grief during this difficult period.

The university disclosed that the Acting Dean of Students’ Affairs, Dr. Abiodun Fatai-Abatan, coordinated the institution’s response, monitored the student’s condition, and maintained communication with the medical team overseeing his treatment.

Despite efforts by healthcare professionals to save his life, Boluwatife passed away on June 2, 2026.

LASU said its representatives have met with the deceased’s family, officials of the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), and law enforcement authorities as part of efforts to ensure justice is served.

The institution added that it is working closely with security agencies investigating the attack and expressed confidence that those responsible would be identified and prosecuted.

Describing Boluwatife as a valued member of the university community, LASU urged students, staff, and stakeholders to support his family in their time of loss. The university also called for calm as investigations continue.

The incident has renewed concerns about security in communities surrounding tertiary institutions in Lagos, with stakeholders calling for stronger measures to protect students and residents from criminal attacks.
