Cape Verde national team captain Ryan Mendes has been accused of raping a team translator during the squad’s trip to New Zealand in March, with local authorities investigating the allegations.

According to Brazilian media outlet Globo, the complainant, a Brazilian woman hired as the team’s translator for the FIFA Series matches in New Zealand, alleged that Mendes forced his way into her hotel room after a social gathering, physically assaulted her, and sexually assaulted her.

The woman said she reported the incident to several officials linked to the Cape Verde Football Federation but did not receive a response. She later filed a complaint with New Zealand police.

Police are reportedly reviewing security camera footage from the Auckland hotel and awaiting forensic examination results before deciding whether to file charges.

The alleged incident was first reported by New Zealand media last month, although the player’s identity was not disclosed at the time.

The complainant also reportedly submitted photographs of injuries she said she sustained during the alleged assault.

Mendes, 36, has played in all three of Cape Verde’s matches at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where the African nation has enjoyed a historic run by reaching the knockout stage for the first time. He has not publicly responded to the allegations.

FIFA said it is in contact with New Zealand authorities and takes allegations of misconduct “extremely seriously.” However, the governing body said it could not comment further or confirm whether any formal disciplinary proceedings are underway.

The investigation remains ongoing, and no criminal charges have been announced against Mendes as of the time of reporting.
