Tobi Amusan has secured Nigeria’s first gold medal at the 2026 African Senior Athletics Championships in Ghana after winning the women’s 100 metres hurdles final.

The world record holder defeated Zimbabwe’s Ashley Miller in Wednesday’s final, while fellow Nigerian Adaobi Tabugbo claimed bronze to complete a strong outing for Team Nigeria in the event.

The victory marked Amusan’s third African Championship title in the women’s 100m hurdles, further cementing her dominance on the continent.

Nigeria also celebrated more podium finishes as Chidera Ezeakor won bronze in the men’s 100 metres after clocking 10.31 seconds. Cameroon’s Emmanuel Eseme took gold, while South Africa’s Bradley Nkoana finished second with the same time as Ezeakor.

In the women’s 100 metres final, Rosemary Chukwuma settled for silver after a dramatic photo-finish race. Chukwuma and Cameroon’s Herverge Kole Etame both recorded 11.48 seconds, but the Cameroonian was eventually declared winner by officials. Liberia’s Thelma Davies claimed bronze.

Reports indicated that athletics publication Making of Champions announced Nigeria had lodged an official protest against the decision that placed Chukwuma second.

Elsewhere, Sade Olatoye added another silver medal for Nigeria in the women’s hammer throw with a best mark of 69.60 metres.

Earlier in the competition, Divine Oladipo and Obiageri Pamela Amaechi won silver and bronze respectively in the women’s discus throw event.
