President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has paid a glowing tribute to former Ogun State Governor and veteran journalist, Chief Olusegun Osoba, describing him as a “brother in purpose” whose lifelong commitment to public service, journalism and democratic governance has inspired generations.
In a heartfelt birthday message released on Tuesday, Tinubu reflected on his long-standing relationship with the elder statesman, saying their decades of friendship had been built on shared values and a common vision for a better Nigeria.
“I have known Aremo Chief Olusegun Osoba for so many years that we could easily write a book about one another,” the President said, recalling Osoba’s warmth, wisdom and dedication to service.
Tinubu noted that although they entered public life through different paths, they were united by a belief that Nigeria could be governed with competence, respect for institutions and unwavering commitment to the welfare of its citizens.
The President praised Osoba’s contributions as both a journalist and politician, highlighting his passion for mentoring young reporters and his insistence that governance should always focus on the impact of policies on ordinary Nigerians.
According to Tinubu, Osoba consistently reminded political strategists to consider the interests of everyday citizens, including newspaper vendors and classroom teachers, even during intense campaign planning.
Reflecting on the challenges they had faced together, Tinubu described Osoba as a steady and calming influence whose knowledge of Nigeria’s political history often provided valuable perspective during difficult moments.
“He reminds you that we are part of a longer story and that we do not have to get everything right today, but we must not get the important things wrong,” the President said.
Tinubu also commended Osoba’s consistency and integrity, saying the former governor remained the same in both public and private life. He praised his courtesy, concern for people’s welfare and ability to disagree without allowing differences to become personal.
The President expressed gratitude for Osoba’s friendship, counsel and exemplary leadership, describing him as a man who has demonstrated that character is the foundation of true leadership.
Rather than wishing him additional honours, Tinubu prayed for good health and many more years for the elder statesman to witness the continued growth of the democratic ideals they had championed together.
“Thank you for being a brother in purpose. Thank you for the counsel, your laughter, and for the reminder that leadership without character is worthless,” the President said, wishing Osoba peace and expressing hope that they would continue working together in service of the nation.
