The Organising Secretary of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Lagos State Council, Comrade Toba Ajiboye, popularly known as Toba Ijaya, is dead.
His death was confirmed on Tuesday by the Chairman of the NURTW Lagos State Council, Mustapha Adekunle, widely known as Sego.
In a condolence message posted on his verified Facebook page, Adekunle described the late union leader as a trusted friend, loyal ally and a committed member of the union whose contributions would not be forgotten.
“The news of the sudden passing of Comrade Toba Ajiboye has left me deeply saddened and heartbroken. It is difficult to come to terms with the loss of such a loyal, dependable and committed ally,” he wrote.
He added that Ajiboye was “more than an ally; he was a trusted friend, a man of steadfast loyalty and unwavering commitment, and a true pillar of TeamSego and SegoNation.”
Ajiboye’s death comes barely two days after he reportedly survived an assassination attempt on Sunday night in the Fadeyi area of Lagos.
According to sources, suspected gunmen intercepted his vehicle as he was returning home and opened fire on it, leaving the white vehicle riddled with bullets. A video circulating on social media showed multiple bullet holes in the windscreen and other parts of the vehicle.
Sources familiar with the incident said Ajiboye and other occupants of the vehicle sustained gunshot injuries but survived the attack. He was reportedly attacked while heading towards Ikorodu Road after leaving the Fadeyi area.
The circumstances surrounding his death were not immediately clear, and authorities have yet to confirm whether it was directly linked to the shooting.
The incident has heightened tension in Fadeyi and neighbouring communities amid fears of possible reprisal attacks. Security personnel, including operatives of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS), have been deployed to strategic locations to maintain law and order.
Offering condolences to the deceased’s family and the union, Adekunle prayed for God to grant Ajiboye eternal rest and strength to those mourning his passing.
“Farewell, my dear friend. Your loyalty, friendship and unwavering support will forever remain in my heart. You will be deeply missed, and I will never forget the bond we shared. Rest well, Toba. Until we meet again,” he said.
