An NGO, the Abuja School of Social and Political Thought (ASSPT), has submitted a Freedom of Information (FOI) request to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) seeking clarification on alleged allocation of plots of land in Abuja to senior electoral officials by the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA).
In a letter dated May 13 and signed by its Executive Director, Sam Amadi, the group said the request was prompted by media reports alleging that several INEC officials, including national commissioners and directors, may have benefited from land allocations under the current FCT Minister.
The organisation asked INEC to confirm whether any serving officials received such allocations and to provide details including names, positions, departments, dates, and sizes of the plots involved.
It also demanded to know whether the affected officials declared the allocations in line with public service rules and asset declaration requirements, and whether any internal investigation had been launched into the matter.
According to ASSPT, the inquiry is in the public interest, especially given INEC’s constitutional role in safeguarding Nigeria’s electoral integrity and maintaining public confidence ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The group further requested copies of INEC’s internal rules and code of conduct governing acceptance of gifts or benefits from politically exposed persons.
INEC is expected to respond within seven days.
