The Advertising Regulatory Council of Nigeria (ARCON) has condemned the circulation of unapproved and offensive advertisements by Bokku Supermarket on social media, describing them as divisive and contrary to the Federal Government’s policy on national unity and peaceful coexistence.

In a statement signed by its Director-General, Dr. Olalekan Fadolapo, and dated October 29, 2025, ARCON said the adverts in question denigrated a section of the Nigerian populace, inciting ethnic and sectional prejudices that could fuel disharmony in the country.
Recall that the advert had insinuated that Igbo were cheaters and that if you buy your goods in Boku you will avoid being cheated by Igbos.
According to the regulatory body, the Bokku Supermarket advertisements were not submitted to or approved by the Advertising Standards Panel, in clear violation of Nigerian advertising laws.

“ARCON is committed to taking all necessary steps, including legal actions, to sanction platform owners, advertisers, and agencies that expose unapproved advertisements,” the statement read.

To this end, ARCON has activated a special monitoring and enforcement task force to track unapproved adverts circulating across media platforms in Nigeria.

The council also reminded stakeholders that any disciplinary action will follow due process, with the Advertising Offences Tribunal determining the appropriate sanctions to be imposed.

While appreciating Nigerians who have reported violations of advertising ethics, ARCON urged the public to continue supporting its drive toward a more decent and consumer-protective advertising environment by reporting unethical or deceptive content.

“All stakeholders and the advertising community are encouraged to recommit to the principles of truthful, legal, decent, and responsible advertising,” the statement added.
