The management of Paul University, Awka, has suspended an Anglican priest and member of its academic staff, Venerable Cornelius Eze, over allegations of sexual misconduct involving students.
Eze, a Practical Biology Technologist in the Faculty of Natural and Applied Sciences, was placed on indefinite suspension pending the outcome of the university’s internal disciplinary process and investigations by relevant security agencies.
The university said the allegations were brought to its attention on July 14, prompting immediate intervention by the management. It disclosed that security agencies were invited to take over the investigation to prevent a breakdown of law and order after tensions reportedly rose among students following the incident.
A video circulating on social media allegedly showed the suspended staff member dressed in boxer shorts and fleeing from his office after the incident.
In a statement issued by the institution’s Public Relations Officer, Rev. Godisplan Onukwufor, the university said the suspension was a preliminary administrative measure and would not prejudice the outcome of the ongoing investigations.
The institution reiterated its zero-tolerance policy on sexual harassment, abuse of office, immoral conduct and any behaviour capable of endangering the safety, dignity and welfare of students or staff.
It added that any member of the university community found culpable would face disciplinary action in accordance with the institution’s regulations and the laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
The university also announced plans to provide counselling and psychological support for affected students and others impacted by the incident. It urged the public to avoid speculation or the spread of misinformation while investigations continue, assuring parents, students and staff of its commitment to maintaining a safe and morally sound learning environment.
