Former Governor of Anambra State and 2023 Labour Party Presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, has once again condemned the ongoing practice of withholding pensions and gratuities owed to senior citizens by the government. In a passionate statement, Obi emphasized that this failure to pay the elderly their rightful benefits is a grave injustice that undermines the dignity and well-being of Nigeria’s aging population.

“I have said it before, and I still maintain, that any government that withholds the pensions and gratuities of our senior citizens is doing a disservice to those who have contributed to the progress of this nation,” Obi stated. “It is a betrayal of trust and a reflection of poor leadership.”

The former governor, known for his advocacy for social justice and economic reforms, expressed deep concern over the negative impact on the livelihoods of pensioners, many of whom rely on these funds as their primary means of survival. He called on the government to urgently address the issue and ensure that those who have spent their lives in service to the country are not left in hardship during their twilight years.

Obi also urged citizens to continue to hold their leaders accountable, demanding that basic rights and entitlements be honored without delay. “We cannot, in good conscience, allow this to continue,” he said. “Our senior citizens deserve respect, and that begins with ensuring they receive the pensions and gratuities they’ve earned.”

The issue of unpaid pensions has been a persistent problem in Nigeria, with many pensioners across the country frequently reporting delays and non-payment of their dues, leading to protests and public outcry.
