A South African-born woman of Nigerian heritage, Ngozi Acholonu, has finally located her late father’s family after a social media appeal launched to help her trace her paternal roots.
Ngozi had recently embarked on a search for her biological father, Mr. Austin Acholonu (Prince), reportedly from Mbaitolu Local Government Area of Imo State, Nigeria.
According to information shared during the search, Austin met Ngozi’s mother in Hillbrow, Johannesburg, South Africa, in 1996, and their relationship resulted in the birth of Ngozi.
Growing up, Ngozi had been left with limited information about her Nigerian father and had long wanted to know more about him, his family and her paternal heritage.
Her search, however, received a major boost after members of the public widely circulated an appeal seeking information about Austin Acholonu and his relatives.
The response to the appeal eventually provided Ngozi with the information she needed to establish contact with her father’s family.
It was subsequently discovered that her father, Austin Acholonu, had died in 2017.
Although Ngozi was unable to meet her father before his death, the successful search has now enabled her to connect with his family and begin learning more about her Nigerian roots.
The development has been described as a heartwarming example of how social media and collective public action can help reconnect families separated by distance and time.
For Ngozi, the discovery represents more than simply finding relatives. It offers an opportunity to understand her heritage, establish a relationship with her paternal family and fill in some of the gaps in the story of her family background.
The successful search also highlights the potential of social media to bring people together and help trace families and loved ones who have been separated for many years.
