Writer E. Jean Carroll has received more than $5.6 million in damages from U.S. President Donald Trump, three years after a federal jury found him liable for sexual abuse and defamation in a civil case.

The payment, which includes approximately three years of accrued interest, follows the conclusion of Trump’s appeals in the case. A Manhattan federal jury awarded Carroll $5 million in damages in 2023 after finding Trump liable for sexually abusing and defaming her.

Confirming the payment, Carroll’s attorney, Roberta Kaplan, said the damages had now been paid in full.

“Three years ago, a unanimous nine-person jury found President Trump liable for sexually assaulting and defaming E. Jean Carroll. Today, we are pleased to report that she has received the damages payment the jury awarded her,” Kaplan said.

The White House referred requests for comment to Trump’s personal legal team, which did not immediately respond.

The legal dispute stemmed from Carroll’s 2019 memoir, in which she accused Trump of sexually assaulting her in a dressing room at a Manhattan department store in 1996. Trump denied the allegation, insisted he had never met Carroll and accused her of fabricating the claim, prompting Carroll to sue him for defamation.

Last week, U.S. District Judge Lewis Kaplan ordered Trump to pay the damages after the U.S. Supreme Court declined to hear his appeal, effectively allowing the jury’s verdict to stand.

Despite the payment, Trump continues to challenge a separate judgment in another defamation case brought by Carroll, in which she was awarded $83 million. Although he has appealed that ruling, federal courts have so far upheld the award.

The latest payment marks the end of one chapter in the prolonged legal battle, while the larger defamation award remains under appeal.
