Teachers in public schools across the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) have commenced an indefinite strike over unresolved demands with the authorities, leaving classrooms empty and academic activities stalled.

A visit to several schools in Abuja, including LEA Primary School Area 10 Garki and Government Science Technical College Area 3 Garki, revealed deserted premises with no teachers or students present.

The strike follows a directive issued by the FCT Wing of the Nigeria Union of Teachers, instructing both primary and secondary school teachers to withdraw their services indefinitely.

In a communiqué signed by State Chairman Abdullahi Shafa, State Secretary Margaret Jethro, and Publicity Secretary Ibukun Adekeye, the union said the action followed the expiration of a seven-day ultimatum issued to the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, on March 29.

The union explained that the decision was reached during an emergency State Wing Executive Council meeting, citing the government’s failure to address their demands, particularly amid worsening economic conditions affecting teachers in the FCT.

The development has disrupted learning in public schools across the territory, with no immediate resolution in sight.
