The Oyo State Government will on Friday inaugurate a Judicial Commission of Inquiry to investigate the abduction of students and teachers from the Esinele and Yawota communities in Oriire Local Government Area.
The victims were kidnapped on May 15, 2026, and spent 56 days in captivity before regaining their freedom.
In a statement, the Commissioner for Information, Prince Dotun Oyelade, said the inauguration would take place at the Executive Council Chamber of the Governor’s Office in Ibadan.
He said the commission had been tasked with investigating the circumstances surrounding the abduction and making recommendations aimed at preventing similar incidents in the future.
Oyelade recalled that Governor Seyi Makinde had pledged to establish an independent panel of inquiry during his statewide broadcast after the victims were released. The governor had also called on the United Nations to support an independent investigation into the mass abduction.
According to the commissioner, the establishment of the Judicial Commission of Inquiry underscores the state’s commitment to uncovering the facts behind the incident, ensuring accountability where necessary, and strengthening security measures to prevent a recurrence.
