FG rewards 12 outstanding teachers with ₦350m

The Federal Government has awarded a total of ₦350 million to 12 outstanding teachers drawn from across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones in recognition of their dedication and impact on the education sector.

The Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, announced this on Tuesday at the Nigeria Teachers’ Summit 2026 currently holding in Abuja.

According to the minister, the award recipients were selected from both basic and senior secondary education levels nationwide. Each of the 12 teachers will receive ₦25 million, while the overall best-performing teacher in the country will receive ₦50 million.

Dr. Alausa explained that the initiative is part of efforts to strengthen the teaching profession, promote excellence, and support sustainable education reforms.

The summit, themed “Empowering Teachers, Strengthening the System: A National Agenda for Education Transformation and Sustainability,” is aimed at shaping national education policy through dialogue and stakeholder engagement.

Also speaking at the event, Minister of State for Education, Prof. Suwaiba Said Ahmad, stressed that teachers remain central to meaningful education reform, noting that no education system can exceed the quality and motivation of its teachers.

President of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Comrade Titus Amba, commended the Federal Government for recognising teachers and investing in professional development, describing teachers as the backbone of effective education delivery.
