The Federal High Court in Abuja has granted a ₦200 million bail to the presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC) and publisher, Omoyele Sowore, who is standing trial over alleged cybercrime charges.

In a ruling delivered on Tuesday, Justice Mohammed Umar ordered Sowore to produce two sureties to perfect the bail conditions. One of the sureties must be a traditional ruler from Sowore’s community, while the other must own landed property in Abuja.

The court also directed the prosecution to verify the sureties before the bail takes effect.

As part of the conditions, Sowore was ordered to deposit his international passport with the Deputy Chief Registrar of the court pending the conclusion of the trial.

Following the ruling, Justice Umar released Sowore to his legal team and adjourned the case until July 6, when the defence is expected to open its case.

Earlier this month, the court remanded Sowore at the Kuje Correctional Centre pending the determination of his application seeking a stay of the order revoking his earlier bail and the bench warrant issued against him.

The judge also dismissed Sowore’s application requesting that he withdraw from the case over allegations of bias.

Sowore has pleaded not guilty to the alleged cybercrime charges. The trial will resume on July 6 for the commencement of the defence.
