Canada’s men’s national team has advanced to the FIFA World Cup knockout stage for the first time in its history despite a 2-1 defeat to Switzerland in its final Group B match.

The loss saw Canada finish second in the group behind Switzerland, setting up a Round of 32 clash against South Africa in Los Angeles on Sunday.

A victory over Switzerland would have allowed Canada to top the group and remain in Vancouver for its first knockout match. Instead, the defeat means a more difficult route through the tournament, with all remaining matches now being win-or-go-home encounters.

Despite the setback, head coach Jesse Marsch remained optimistic about Canada’s chances of making a deep run.

“We wanted to be here in Vancouver, but we still have a massive opportunity ahead of us,” Marsch said after the match.

Canada’s historic qualification marks a major achievement for the program and keeps alive hopes of an extended World Cup campaign.

If Canada defeats South Africa, it will advance to the Round of 16 in Houston on July 4. A victory there would send the team to the quarter-finals in Boston on July 9, while a win in that match would secure a place in the semi-finals in Dallas on July 14.

Canada will now focus on recovering and preparing for its first-ever World Cup knockout match as it seeks to continue its remarkable journey on football’s biggest stage.
