Tottenham Hotspur’s difficult start to the Premier League season continued on Saturday as they were held to a goalless draw by Everton at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
The result means Spurs remain without a win or a goal after their opening four league matches, leaving growing pressure on manager Roberto De Zerbi.
Tottenham, who spent more than £380 million on 10 new players during the summer transfer window, dominated possession for long periods but struggled to create clear-cut opportunities.
The hosts started brightly, with Jan Paul van Hecke firing over from the edge of the area before Mateus Fernandes was unable to finish after being played through by the Dutch defender.
Archie Gray and Omar Marmoush also saw efforts blocked as Tottenham searched for an opening, while Sandro Tonali became increasingly influential in midfield.
Everton, however, finished the first half strongly. James Garner forced Antonín Kinsky into a save with a stoppage-time free-kick, with the Tottenham goalkeeper tipping the effort around the post.
The visitors continued to threaten after the break. Thierno Barry came close in the 50th minute when his header from Tyrique George’s cross struck Kinsky, while Brennan Johnson was later presented with a golden opportunity to punish his former club.
Johnson was unable to convert Dewsbury-Hall’s cutback, sending his effort over the bar in the 75th minute.
De Zerbi responded by bringing on Lucas Bergvall, Mohammed Kudus and Mathys Tel as Spurs pushed for a breakthrough.
Tottenham’s best chance came late in the match when Savio found Bergvall, but the midfielder’s curling effort from 22 yards was brilliantly tipped wide by Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford.
James Maddison’s introduction also lifted the home crowd, but Tottenham could not find the goal that would have secured their first league victory of the campaign.
The draw leaves Spurs 17th with just two points from four matches, while Everton remain unbeaten after recording their third draw of the season.
