Former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Babachir Lawal, has resigned from the African Democratic Congress (ADC), accusing the party leadership of manipulating its recently concluded primary election in favour of former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar and his loyalists.

In a statement issued on Monday, Lawal described the primary process as “massively rigged,” alleging that the exercise was deliberately structured to ensure the emergence of Atiku and candidates aligned with him.

According to the former SGF, the conduct of the primaries fell short of democratic standards and undermined the principles of fairness and transparency expected within a political party.

Lawal claimed that the outcome had been predetermined, leaving little room for genuine competition among aspirants. He expressed disappointment over what he described as the erosion of internal democracy within the party.

The former ADC chieftain said his decision to leave the party was informed by his commitment to democratic values and credible electoral processes.

His resignation comes amid growing political realignments ahead of future electoral contests and is expected to generate reactions within the party and the wider political landscape.

As of the time of filing this report, neither Atiku Abubakar nor the ADC leadership had officially responded to the allegations.
