The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has successfully concluded its nationwide presidential, governorship, National Assembly, and State Assembly primaries, recording a large turnout of party members and supporters across the country.
The exercise, which held between Thursday, May 28 and Friday, May 29, witnessed massive participation in several states through direct primaries and affirmations. Party leaders described the turnout as a strong indication of the NDC’s growing grassroots support ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Despite initial concerns over logistics, including disruptions linked to the Eid-el-Kabir holidays and transportation challenges, the process was largely peaceful and well-coordinated nationwide.
Officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), alongside security agencies such as the Police and the Department of State Services (DSS), monitored the exercise in various locations to ensure compliance with electoral guidelines and maintain order.
Reports from across the country indicated that voting and affirmation processes were orderly, transparent, and conducted in a calm atmosphere, with party stakeholders commending the discipline of aspirants and supporters.
In several centres, the exercise was described as festive, with supporters singing solidarity songs and expressing optimism about the party’s future and leadership direction.
Observers also noted the NDC’s internal arrangement allowing aspirants to participate in primaries before purchasing nomination forms, a process some described as innovative and a step toward strengthening internal democracy. Under this arrangement, only successful aspirants will proceed to purchase nomination forms.
The National Working Committee of the party is expected to complete collation of results from all states before issuing official announcements from its national headquarters.
Party leaders said the successful conduct of the primaries marks a significant milestone in the party’s development as a national political force committed to democratic participation, credible leadership, and national renewal.
