Former President Goodluck Jonathan has said he will consult widely before deciding whether to contest the 2027 presidential election, describing the race for Nigeria’s top office as a serious undertaking that requires careful thought.

Jonathan spoke in Abuja on Thursday while receiving youth groups who appealed to him to return to the presidential race ahead of the next general election.

Responding to the calls, the former president said contesting for the presidency was “not a computer game,” adding that he would engage in broad consultations before making any political decision.

He commended the youths for showing concern about the country’s future, noting that patriotism and active participation were essential to national development.

Jonathan also urged young Nigerians to promote peace and support credible elections, warning that flawed electoral processes discourage competent citizens from participating in politics.

According to him, peaceful and transparent elections remain critical to strengthening democracy and encouraging more qualified Nigerians to seek public office.

The former president expressed concern over Nigeria’s low voter turnout, describing it as one of the poorest he had observed compared to other African and Southeast Asian countries where he had monitored elections.

He called on the Independent National Electoral Commission to investigate the causes of voter apathy and develop strategies to improve participation in future elections.

Jonathan further challenged Nigerian youths to play active roles in the democratic process by obtaining voter cards and voting during elections rather than merely calling on leaders to contest office.

He also lamented the negative perception of Nigerians abroad, blaming years of poor leadership for the level of disdain some citizens face outside the country.

Reiterating his position, Jonathan said he would continue consultations before deciding on any possible presidential ambition in 2027
