Ainsley Maitland-Niles scored a stunning stoppage-time equaliser as Everton twice came from behind to earn a 2-2 draw against Manchester United in the Premier League on Sunday.
United appeared destined for victory at Hill Dickinson Stadium after goals from Bryan Mbeumo and Benjamin Sesko, but Everton produced a dramatic late comeback to preserve their unbeaten start to the season.
Mbeumo broke the deadlock less than a minute into the second half, curling a superb effort beyond Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford after receiving the ball from Kobbie Mainoo.
Everton responded in the 83rd minute when Tyrique George fired home after being set up by Hayden Hackney.
United regained the lead just five minutes later, with substitute Benjamin Sesko heading Luke Shaw’s cross into the net to make it 2-1.
However, Everton refused to give up. With six minutes of added time played, Maitland-Niles produced the decisive moment, curling an unstoppable shot past United goalkeeper Senne Lammens to send the home supporters into celebration.
The goal was Maitland-Niles’ first Premier League strike since December 2019 and capped an impressive return to English football after his deadline-day move from Lyon.
United had made the brighter start and came close to opening the scoring when Bruno Fernandes struck the crossbar following a knockdown from Mbeumo.
Marcus Rashford also caused problems for the Everton defence, while the hosts struggled to create clear opportunities in the first half.
Everton’s attacking options have been weakened by the departures of Iliman Ndiaye and Beto, while a late attempt to sign Folarin Balogun collapsed before the transfer window closed.
Manager David Moyes introduced Jack Grealish and Hackney in the second half in an effort to change the game, and the substitutes played a major role in Everton’s comeback.
The draw leaves Everton unbeaten after three league matches, but United’s defensive problems will remain a major concern.
Manchester United have now conceded at least twice in each of their opening three Premier League matches this season—a defensive record they will need to improve if they are to challenge for a place among the league’s leading sides.
