The Nigeria Police Force has arrested and transferred an officer implicated in the fatal shooting of a suspect in Effurun, Delta State, pledging a full investigation and justice for the deceased.

In a statement issued by the Delta State Police Command, the Commissioner of Police, Yemi Oyeniyi, condemned what he described as an extra-judicial killing of 28-year-old Mene Ogidi, which occurred on April 26, 2026.

According to the police, operatives attached to Area Command Effurun had acted on credible intelligence from members of the public that the deceased was attempting to waybill a parcel containing a Beretta pistol with four rounds of ammunition. Officers were subsequently deployed to take the suspect into custody.

However, the team leader, Assistant Superintendent of Police Nuhu Usman, allegedly discharged his firearm in violation of Force Order 237 and standard operating procedures, resulting in the suspect’s death.

Following the incident, the police commissioner ordered the immediate arrest of the officer, who was first transferred to the State Headquarters in Asaba and later moved to Force Headquarters in Abuja. He is expected to appear before the Force Disciplinary Committee for possible sanctions and prosecution.

The Command reiterated its commitment to the rule of law, respect for human rights, and professional conduct, stressing a zero-tolerance stance on extra-judicial actions.

While extending condolences to the family of the deceased, the police assured the public that all necessary steps were being taken to ensure accountability. Residents were also urged to remain calm and law-abiding as the investigation continues.
