The President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, has declared the Ondo South Senatorial seat vacant following the appointment of its former occupant, Jimoh Ibrahim, as Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations.

Akpabio made the announcement during Tuesday’s plenary, stating that the vacancy became necessary in line with constitutional provisions after Ibrahim’s new diplomatic appointment.

He subsequently directed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to conduct a bye-election within 30 days to fill the vacant seat.

The Senate President also instructed the Clerk of the National Assembly to formally communicate the resolution of the Senate to INEC for immediate action.
