INTERPOL has raided the alarm over the extent of money laundering activities originating from Nigeria, stating that “hundreds of thousands of dollars” are illicitly transferred out of the country every hour.
This was revealed by Garba Baba Umar, INTERPOL’s Vice President for Africa, during a workshop at the EFCC Academy in Abuja. Umar emphasized the global and transnational nature of financial crimes, calling for a concerted effort by law enforcement agencies to tackle these issues. The workshop, titled “Strengthening Capacity and Coordination against Financial Crimes,” also featured discussions on initiatives like “Silver Notices Against Money Laundering,” aimed at making it more difficult for criminals to launder money. The event underscored the necessity of international cooperation and regular training for law enforcement to stay ahead of evolving criminal strategies.
