Finidi George has resigned as the coach of the Super Eagles after overseeing just two matches, both of which ended without a win.

His resignation follows a 2-1 defeat to Benin Republic on matchday 4 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, leaving the Super Eagles winless in four games.

Former Eagles media officer Toyin Ibitoye confirmed the news on Saturday via his X account, stating, “News just in. Finidi George #FinidiGeorge_FG has resigned from his #NGSuperEagles manager position.”

An NFF source also confirmed the resignation, noting that the federation is now seeking a new manager and considering reducing the head coach’s salary.

Finidi George, 53, was appointed in May following the departure of Portuguese coach Jose Peseiro after the 2023 African Cup of Nations. In March, George served as the interim coach for international friendlies against Ghana and Mali.

**NFF Vows to Secure World Cup Qualification**

With Nigeria’s World Cup qualification hopes in jeopardy, NFF president Ibrahim Gusau has pledged that the federation will take all necessary steps to ensure the Super Eagles qualify for the 2026 World Cup in the U.S., Canada, and Mexico.

Gusau made this commitment on Thursday in Abuja after a closed-door meeting with Sports Minister Sen. John Owan Enoh to address the team’s poor performance in the qualifiers.

“It’s a very sad moment for Nigerian football, but we are working tirelessly with the minister to devise comprehensive measures to improve the situation. We will fight to ensure Nigeria qualifies for the World Cup,” Gusau stated. He assured that the NFF will soon implement significant changes aimed at securing World Cup qualification.
