UCL: Chelsea revival ends Dortmund’s perfect run

The Champions League returned with thrilling games in England and Portugal.

Here is what went down as teams qualified for the quarter-finals.

Manager Graham Potter finally found his recipe as a determined Chelsea side turned things around against Borussia Dortmund to move on 2-1 on aggregate.

After an initial delay due to the German bus arriving at Stamford Bridge late, the visitors suffered an early injury blow as Julian Brandt pulled his hamstring after three minutes. With Karim Adeyemi also out, it was another huge blow.

The hosts threatened for the opener, as João Félix, Raheem Sterling and Kai Havertz looked eager. The German striker had an attempt hit off the post at the half-hour mark, and a goal was then ruled offside.

Meanwhile, the best chance at the other end arrived when Marco Reus’ free-kick called Kepa into a diving save.

Just before the break, however, Chelsea’s high press eventually cracked Dortmund as Raheem Sterling levelled the tie on aggregate for his 27th Champions League goal in his career.

Coming out after the break, VAR handed the hosts a penalty following a Marius Wolf handball. Havertz, however, hit the post again to Chelsea’s agony.

But dramatically, VAR then allowed the Blues to retake the penalty, and the German striker did not miss his second attempt from the spot.

Visibly frustrated by their luck, Dortmund attempted to ramp on the pressure, but it was too little too late for the visitors, who always looked a step behind. Jude Bellingham, in particular, had a potential equaliser curl wide.

The win meant Chelsea have now won back-to-back games under Potter and scored two goals in the same game for the first time this year. Meanwhile, Dortmund’s perfect run of 10 wins from 10 in 2023 ended.
