The Emir of Gumel in Jigawa State, Dr Ahmad Muhammad Sani, has died at the age of 84 after 46 years on the traditional throne.
The first-class emir reportedly died in Cairo, Egypt, on Thursday, September 3, 2026.
The Jigawa State Government announced his death through the Secretary to the State Government, Malam Bala Ibrahim, who expressed deep sorrow over the passing of the traditional ruler.
“With heavy hearts and profound sorrow, the state government announces the passing away of the Emir of Gumel, Dr Ahmad Muhammad Sani, at the age of 84,” Ibrahim said.
The SSG described the late emir’s 46-year reign as remarkable, noting that he made significant contributions to the development of the Gumel Emirate and Jigawa State.
According to him, the traditional ruler would be remembered for his dedication to his people, as well as his simplicity, humility and commitment to community development.
Ibrahim also highlighted the emir’s contributions to education, particularly efforts to improve school enrolment, as well as initiatives aimed at expanding access to effective public healthcare.
He said the late monarch also played an important role in promoting peace and stability within the Gumel Emirate and neighbouring communities.
The SSG particularly commended the emir for fostering peaceful relations between communities in the emirate and border communities in the Republic of Niger.
Ibrahim said the late monarch’s contributions had secured him a lasting place in the history of Gumel Emirate and Jigawa State.
He prayed Allah to forgive the deceased’s shortcomings and grant him eternal rest in Jannatul Firdausi.
The state government said details of the funeral prayer and other burial arrangements would be communicated to the public by the Gumel Emirate.
