President Muhammadu Buhari has come understand intense verbal attacks from commentators on the internet who viewed his comments over her wife Aisha as belonging to his bedroom and kitchen as unbecoming of a President.
Below are some of the remarks on BBC facebook page where the video of the Preident’s interview was relayed.
Emmanuel Manny Agholor:
My wife belongs wherever I belong because we are always ONE…. Everyone needs the support of a woman according to my bible.
Wisdom Emeka:
What is the difference between Mohammadu Buhari of Nigeria and Donald Trump of America? They feel women are inferior, wrong perception. No women no world.
Manuel Aderemi:
Coming from a president, that is so wrong!
Will he be ok, after educating his daughters, for a guy to say they are simply for making babies and cooking?
I lose confidence in this man daily. Shows how archaic his thought process is and why Nigerian is and will continue to be a mess under him! .
James Chigozie Onwuemeodo:
But this same buhari with his fellow jihadists around the world is backing Hillary clinton to rule America and even sponsoring her. Clinton should belong to Bill’s kitchen then.
Oluwakemi Juba:
Extremely disappointed in both the President and the First lady. The First lady for questioning her husband’s presidency in public, which is a huge sign of conflict and disagreement that could have been settled off the record and more at the President for succumbing to the level of his wife, and not portraying the true values of how a man or president should react under such circumstance or situation.
Peter Lungile Chidothe:
Mr. President, that’s all you think women belong to? Too bad. You have to start thinking all over again! That’s why you are not making an effort to rescue the kidnapped girls, you think they are not important. Am I lying?
Marfa Ezzy Simon:
U guys should undstnd dat he is talking to his wife not women in general, i know some people wil be happy to see the woman appointing people into top position so dat they’ll call the president a weak man, but, it won’t happen bcos the man is wiser than her. That’s why he said before dat nothing like first lady in his Government.
Clara Chinwe Okoro:
Very sad indeed and to think he made this statement to a woman who leads one of the most powerful countries in the world,Angela Merkel, and hypocrites like Michelle Obama hasn’t seen this ?i heard she is busy bashing Donald Trump on the same misogynistic issues.
Ifedoro Ndubuisi Nick:
Out of more than 170Million people of Nigeria, this is who they elected/selected to be their President. What a mindset. Thinking that women belongs only in the kitchen & room services, 1984 mentality. With this kind of mindset, Buhari is a big problem to Nigeria.
Mercy Ebony:
Wow! Is this really a president of a country. Mr, no woman belong to the kitchen. Just stop with this stone age mentality.
Abdullahi Idris:
No there should another important use of you wife sir. Women had assisted and supported prophets, not to talk ruling Nigeria sir, please retract this statement, if the husband had restricted her the kitchen, living room and the other room you wouldn’t have gone to Germany today. Those who can tell this the should please do.
Adu Amani:
Why is he educating his daughter, she will belong to another man’s kitchen… We are already struggling with men disrespecting women and a president added this, who will respect the wife.
Godswill Tapiwanashe Rubaya:
Was shocked by that statement .His wife used to campaign with him before elections and now he comes out and say I don’t know which party she belongs to but I know she belongs to the kitchen!
Theophilus Gblorkpor:
President Muhammadu Buhari’s response to his wife’s comment publicly is most unfortunately; Why relegate the first lady to the kitchen? Does the President still holds those antiquated views of women been good for nothing except the kitchen and taking care of babies? Mr. President you goofed big time. I believe all is not well at home.
Simon Lupatu:
Africa loves and respects it’s Women and their contribution to national prosperity. This is a couple’s quarrel that shouldn’t have escaped the comfort of their home from the start.
Amma Bempomaa:
this is something with all African men….husbands get educated and leave their wives behind….our traditions empower men and even boys…..girl child education is still an issue in Africa.
Kay Cee:
I know he was not referring to all women but his wife on personal grounds, I understand he was being sacarstic or trying to be funny because his wife is well educated, well travelled and involved in public and international women affairs etc, but unfortunately Buhari’s statement is not only indefensible but unacceptable.
Ebenezer Afanyi Dadzie:
When his wife made that comment, I said that she had done very well because this was rare especially in Africa where women’s voices are suppressed – much worst in Islam. And a Muslim was infuriated because I had spoken the truth. And now Mr. Buhari sha…
Amadu Alusine:
Listen to what he said (my wife), Isha know that yet she agree to married him in the first place, that is his belief. He is not talking about women he has appointed women as cabinet ministers and many more position in his goverment. Why are you mis und…
Kien Ed: The thing is, we have been shown his response, but not the question that he was asked. There is no reason to criticise the man based on a response to a question. Half truth is as good as a lie. So BBC broadcast the question as well as the answer. I can see some degree of bias in reporting on the issue.
Amadi Ikechukwu:
Nigerians, when Mrs Buhari went beyond her bound, you hailed. Now the husband(Mr Buhari) is responding, you guys are saying he looks down on women.please let us be critical in our analysis,Mrs Buhari shouldn’t have said all that in her interview.
Aruma Ifesinachi Asogwa:
Hmmm for dz man to have a hrt to disregard his wife in dz form, hmmm he can do worst to Nigerians ,nigerians should get get ready for d worst buhari till 2022,my Biafra brothers and sisters abeg make una get ready we dey go itz written!
Chijioke Festus:
Buhari was saying this in the presence of one of the most powerful personality on the planet(Angela Markel) a woman. And guess what Buhari have gone cap in hand to beg for her assistance not for bedroom or kitchen duties but to combat terrorism.
Chinwe Emekwue:
He made it clear from day one that his wife will not be involved in politics. Now, everyone, fight the corrupt politicians that has crippled our country. They both have an understanding.
Anna Takang:
He said His wife, not women. A woman’s place as Wife and Mother is primarily the Kitchen. Every other thing is Secondary. I can’t. If our Mother’s relegated her Primary duty, Most of us will not be where we are now.
Ugochi Idika:
Do not forget that this same woman owned the first beauty spa and beauty institute in Northern Nigeria. He married her at a very young age but today she holds a masters degree. She also has a Diploma in Beauty Therapy from the Carlton Institute of Beau…
Nathaniel James:
Some black people are really sick minded attacking the brother..I interpret this as the man saying Mind your own Business. Plain and simple. Matter fact its a line I would use if a person asks me which politlcal party my own wife belongs to..
Natalya Sulik:
Because history has taught us that men are capable of governing the world? Please. Women are stronger than the obstacles thrown in our paths. A woman’s place in this world is alongside men. For they are equal. One sex is not inferior to the other. If anything, childbirth puts women higher. For without women, there would be no mankind.
Chindefu Aubrey Kasonu:
Buhari clearly states the wife shall be at home looking after his house and children and not running the sturf in Cabinet affiars like other Presidents.
Jared Elo:
Behind every successful man there is always a woman ! Now you are insulting the same woman who was there tru d process of ur success ! We are watching.
Sampson Gyebi Dankwa:
You may be a president and still lack basic etiquettes and manners. Those words are very demeaning and unfortunate. I ain’t a Nigerian but I know the women he has little respect for will show him his place in the next elections.
N Ndubueze Nnaemeka:
Oya women this one Na una fight, I no wan dey involved; days I stood throughout just to stand with girls.
Abeg if Buba drop another episode make una tell me….
Princewill Achinulo:
Can’t this man pause for a minute and think deeply of the question posed to him and the comment of the wife before responding? This shows the lack of information processing ability and critical thinking. These are the kinds of impulses that drive peopl.
Noble Uche Ihenacho:
Women please know that not all Nigerian men are like this clueless misogynist. I disavow President Buhari’s comment and the comments of any man that tries to justify it.
Chike Nwakanma:
I’m not a fan of GMB but this is not news joor. That probably just didn’t come out right. They need to put some context around it, give him the benefit of doubt, he could’ve meant different. #Propaganda.
Timothy Eddie Banda:
Maybe he meant to his party yet certain expression raises different opinions, hence we need to diplomatical about it. Truly if the case above is direct as phrased then our president should reconsider his statement.
Abby Brooke:
And this is part of why Africa never moves forward … women are half of humanity, to reduce them to “the kitchen, the living room and the other room” is silencing a large part of society.
Aida Awe:
Is he talking about furniture?
… Yep, doesn’t matter how rich and how “powerful” you are, if you don’t have intelligence and wisdom you are just bag of money… Hope somebody gonna use you with that purpose. Ha ha.
Nwogu Benjamin Ebere:
Ask justin trudeau and Obama the same question!! You’d see a 21st century answer…. that’s how their country keeps growing, when you give the future to the people who belong to the future……
Ben Kambalawathila Nyirenda:
He is right because he married a kitchen woman, who do nothing day in day out and they are men who below to bed only while they women run up and down so that they can support their family. I rest my comment.
Derek Ezims:
Why the foolish man went to a country woman is a leader. U can imagine how the world will look at his ignorance reducing women to just kitchen and domestic actions. Stupidity!
Ahi Jo:
Millions of nigerian women voted you in as a president,if they really only belong to the kitchen, you couldnt have saw them standing on the sun just to won you presidency, figure brainless head.
Kwame Achie:
Well, your kitchen is BBC Africa then. Put your house in order. The king looks naked now. As for Aisha Buhari, she’s has failed. In her capacity as first lady, what has she achieved?
Liri Francis Xavier:
Unfortunately, this kind of belief is deeply rooted in men of his generation. He is probably not even aware that it is so wrong for him to be speaking that way. I hope it is a honest joke gone wrong.
Menbi Dejene:
This kind of backward leaders what almost most African country has now. They are demonizing, looters, westerns puppets, and killers. I appreciate the past leaders like Nukruma, Kenyatta, Gaddafi, Haileselassie,Nyerere, Mandella and more who did more for Africa and their people.FORGET THESE FOOLS PERIOD!!!!!!!
Lawenz Ventures:
In America and UK, even when you go out to eat, it’s a 50 50 thing! Women actually even have more right… but in nija the culture and tradition is different.
Emeka Mekus Mopao:
Please an average Christian Nigerian man see women roles more than kitchen and bedroom, they are lots of Nigerian women in good position in workplace and lots of Nigerian women are well educated taking up many job roles, kindly ignore our president comments.
Nwogu Benjamin Ebere :
Seeing comments from the guys supporting this statement makes me wonder how much more decades before we would understand that both men and women are equal and should be treated as such…
Jazuli Asiru:
Islamically,he is right, the duty of a woman is to remained in households activities, so PMB he is right.Allah continued to guide and support you
