Domestic violence of ‘Madam at the top’ against hapless maids is increasing by the day, as an Ebutte Meta Chief Magistrates’ Court on Friday remanded a housewife, Rose Ukweni, at Kirikiri Prisons, Lagos, for allegedly killing her housekeeper, 14-year-old Angela Akpan.
The Magistrate, Mr O.O. Olatunji, who did not take the plea of the accused, said she should be kept behind bars pending advice from the State Director of Public Prosecutions.
The accused, 45, who resides at No. 75, Owoyemi St., off Ojo Road, Ajegunle, Lagos, is facing a charge of murder.
Prosecutor George Nwosu said the accused committed the offence on July 19 at 10.20 p.m. at her residence.
“While Ukweni was beating the house girl for committing an offence, she hit her with a steel chair on the head.
“Angela started bleeding and was rushed to a hospital where she was confirmed dead by the doctor,’’ he told the court.
Nwosu said the offence contravened Section 220 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.
The case was adjourned to September 23 for mention.
