Supporters of suspended Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, suffered a major setback after the All Progressives Congress cleared all 29 lawmakers loyal to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, while disqualifying 65 other aspirants ahead of the 2027 State Assembly elections.

The APC screening committee, which concluded its exercise on Sunday, cleared 33 aspirants in total and barred 65 others from participating in the party’s primaries.

A copy of the committee’s report obtained on Monday showed that all incumbent lawmakers aligned with Wike, including Deputy Speaker Dumle Maol, were successfully screened and approved for the primaries.

The Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Martin Amaewhule, was reportedly excluded from the exercise after opting to contest for a seat in the House of Representatives.

Several individuals believed to be sympathetic to Fubara’s camp were among those disqualified by the committee.

According to the report, aspirants were disqualified over issues such as invalid party nominations, failure to provide voter cards or membership slips, conflicting dates of birth, incomplete documentation, unsworn affidavits, bribery allegations, and insufficient or invalid nominators.

The committee commended aspirants, party officials and security personnel for maintaining order during the screening process.

The development further highlights the growing dominance of Wike’s political structure within the Rivers APC as preparations intensify for the 2027 elections.
