The Zamfara State Police Command has announced that security operatives repelled an attempted attack by armed bandits on Bukuyum town in Bukuyum Local Government Area of the state.
The police also disclosed that more than 30 bodies, suspected to be those of neutralised bandits, had been discovered in surrounding farmlands following a fierce gun battle with security operatives.
The Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Yazid Abubakar, confirmed the development in a statement issued on Saturday, October 31, 2026.
According to the statement, the ongoing clearance operation began on October 28 following an attempted assault on Bukuyum town by armed bandits.
The police said operatives, working alongside local civil security groups, engaged the attackers in a gun battle and successfully prevented them from gaining access to the community.
The command said the discovery of more than 30 suspected bandit bodies suggested that the attackers might have suffered heavy casualties during the confrontation.
However, it cautioned that the actual number of casualties had yet to be established, noting that armed bandits often evacuate their dead and injured from battle locations.
The police further stated that the successful defence of Bukuyum prevented possible loss of lives, destruction of property and further displacement of residents.
It added that preliminary security assessments indicated that sustained pressure from security operations had forced some of the remaining armed bandits to flee the state.
The command reaffirmed its commitment to sustaining the clearance operations in collaboration with other security agencies and relevant stakeholders to eliminate criminal elements and restore peace in affected communities.
It also assured residents of its determination to protect lives and property and strengthen security across Zamfara State.
