Brighton & Hove Albion stunned Manchester City with a 1-0 victory at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday, handing Pep Guardiola’s side their second consecutive Premier League defeat.
Yasin Ayari scored the decisive goal in the 11th minute as Brighton secured all three points against the reigning title contenders.
City had defeated Brighton on penalties in their midweek EFL Cup encounter, but the Seagulls gained revenge in the league, producing a determined defensive performance to protect their early advantage.
The visitors took the lead following an error by City midfielder Matheus Nunes. Brighton defender Lewis Dunk initiated the move with a crossfield free-kick, which Diego Gomez directed into the penalty area.
Nunes failed to clear the ball properly, allowing Maxim De Cuyper to set up Ayari, who calmly converted from close range.
Manchester City responded with sustained pressure, with Iliman Ndiaye emerging as their biggest attacking threat. The forward narrowly missed with a header before testing Brighton goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen with another effort.
At the other end, City goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma denied Gomez from a tight angle, while Dunk produced an important defensive intervention to prevent Erling Haaland from scoring shortly before half-time.
Brighton had an opportunity to extend their advantage early in the second half when Ayari set up De Cuyper inside the box, but the defender fired over the crossbar.
City continued to search for an equaliser, with Ndiaye forcing Verbruggen into an impressive save that saw the goalkeeper turn his effort onto the post.
Nunes also attempted to make amends for his earlier mistake with a curling effort, but Verbruggen reacted brilliantly to keep it out.
Brighton remained dangerous on the counter-attack, and Donnarumma was called into action to stop a De Cuyper header.
City intensified their pressure in the closing stages, but Ndiaye wasted another promising opportunity after Nico O’Reilly delivered the ball across the face of goal.
Brighton nearly doubled their lead in the 88th minute when Jack Hinshelwood connected with Georginio Rutter’s through-ball, only for his attempted finish to find the side-netting.
Verbruggen then produced further important saves to deny Abdukodir Khusanov and Jeremy Doku, while O’Reilly headed wide during the late scramble.
The goalkeeper’s outstanding performance ensured Brighton held on for a valuable victory and a clean sheet.
The result moves Brighton to within two points of Manchester City, who could surrender top spot in the Premier League if Arsenal avoid defeat against Liverpool on Sunday.
