2007: APC protests rock Kano over Alleged imposition of candidates

Hundreds of thousands of APC members in different parts of Kano State, yesterday hit the streets, protesting the alleged imposition of candidates by some party officials, using the name of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf.

From Bagwai/Shanono Local Governments Areas, people took to the streets over what they termed imposition of State House of Assembly and House Representatives candidates against their choices Faruk Lawan and Ali Alhassan Kiyawa.

Lawan and Kiyawa were the choice of party elders, women, youths and other stakeholders at engagements held over the weeks. Their names were duly submitted to Governor Yusuf. They learnt the names could have been changed.

The protesters who blocked major highways, and were carrying placards with different inscriptions, warned that the imposition of candidates by the APC, allegedly using the office of the Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, would affect the party adequately.

They alleged that over time when Badau represented them at the National Assembly, they had not benefited from dividends of democracy, this coupled with poor representation which he had exhibited over the years he was at the National Assembly, were their reasons for changing him.

On Ali Alhassan Kiyawa, they argued that he was an excellent representative at the State House of Assembly and there was no basis whatsoever for changing him against the wishes of the people.

“We are afraid that with this imposition of candidates, APC will lose our areas and that the negative outcomes might affect the entire Kano State results.

The protesters demanded the immediate reversal of the imposition of candidates against their endorsement of Faruk Lawan and Ali Alhassan Kiyawa, their preferred representatives.

Similar protests on are in other parts of the State, all on imposition of candidates.

In Gov Abba’s Gwale Local Government, the are protesting against the imposition of Adamu Mustapha instead of Aliyu Haidar.
The protests in Tsanyawa and Ghari Local Governments are against the displacement of Engr Sani Bala for House of Representatives and Hon Ya’u Gwarmai for State House of Assembly.

On Sunday, some of them conducted prayers in the open, asking the Almighty Allah to intervene.
