President Bola Tinubu has paid glowing tribute to elder statesman and leader of the pan-Yoruba socio-political group, Reuben Fasoranti, on the occasion of his 100th birthday, describing him as a symbol of integrity, principled leadership and dedicated service to Nigeria.
In a personally signed statement released on Sunday to commemorate the centenarian’s birthday on May 11, President Tinubu said his “joy knows no bounds” in witnessing the milestone age attained by the renowned nationalist, administrator, educationist and pro-democracy activist.
The President said Fasoranti deserved the encomiums being showered on him because of his immense contributions to the country and his uncommon life of service.
Tinubu described the Afenifere leader as a man who distinguished himself through discipline, honesty, commitment to noble causes and unwavering adherence to principles, adding that his life remained “a metaphor for integrity, honesty, dedicated service to the nation and true leadership.”
The President highlighted Fasoranti’s academic achievements, noting that he studied at the University of Ibadan, formerly University College, Ibadan, before obtaining postgraduate qualifications in education from institutions in the United Kingdom and Australia.
According to Tinubu, the elder statesman made enduring contributions to education through his teaching career and the establishment of several schools, including Omolere Nursery and Primary School, Akure High School and St. Frances’ Academy in Akure.
The President also traced Fasoranti’s political journey, describing him as one of the last surviving disciples of late nationalist leader Obafemi Awolowo. He recalled that Fasoranti was a member of the defunct Action Group in the First Republic and later the Unity Party of Nigeria during the Second Republic.
Tinubu noted that Fasoranti served as Commissioner for Finance in old Ondo State between 1979 and 1983 under the administration of late Governor Adekunle Ajasin, where his integrity and financial prudence earned him widespread respect.
The President further praised the elder statesman’s role during the military era, saying his voice became one of the strongest against dictatorship and for the restoration of democracy.
He said Fasoranti later emerged as the recognised leader of Afenifere after the group became factionalised following the death of Abraham Adesanya.
Tinubu recalled that Fasoranti survived an assassination attempt allegedly linked to the regime of late military ruler Sani Abacha, but remained steadfast in his opposition to tyranny and oppression.
The President also acknowledged the personal tragedies the elder statesman had endured, including the death of his wife and the killing of his daughter, Funke Olakunrin, by kidnappers in 2019.
Tinubu expressed gratitude for Fasoranti’s support and prayers over the years, especially during his presidential ambition. He recalled visiting the elder statesman in Akure at the beginning of his campaign, where Fasoranti prayed that he would become President of Nigeria.
“God answered his prayer through my victory and eventual ascendancy to the top office,” Tinubu stated.
The President prayed for God to grant the elder statesman many more years in good health, while thanking him for his continued support for the Renewed Hope Administration and his service to Nigeria.
