Former presidential candidate Peter Obi has condemned the alleged extrajudicial killing of a young man in Effurun, Delta State, describing the incident as barbaric and a serious violation of the rule of law.

In a statement on Tuesday, Obi criticised the reported actions of a police officer, identified as Mene Ogidi, noting that no individual should be deprived of life without due process and a fair determination of guilt. He stressed that modern society is built on the principle that justice must be served through lawful means, not arbitrary actions.

The former Anambra State governor said the killing has inflicted deep trauma on the victim’s family and heightened fear among Nigerians already grappling with insecurity. According to him, recurring reports of violence across the country have left citizens psychologically distressed, and incidents involving security personnel further erode public confidence in safety institutions.

Obi, however, commended the police authorities for their prompt response to the incident, expressing confidence that justice would be pursued to its logical conclusion. He emphasised the need for transparency and accountability in handling such cases to reassure the public.

He also called for stricter recruitment processes within the police and other security agencies, urging authorities to ensure that only individuals with sound judgment and the appropriate temperament are entrusted with firearms.

Obi concluded that upholding justice and rebuilding public trust are essential steps toward creating a safer and more accountable society in Nigeria.
