Peter Obi, Seyi Makinde, and Seriake Dickson on Sunday met with Rabiu Kwankwaso in Kano, in what sources describe as high-level political consultations ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The meeting, which took place during the annual Dandalin Kwankwasiyya gathering, was officially framed as part of Eid-el-Fitr celebrations. However, insiders revealed that discussions also focused on possible alliances and political realignments ahead of the next presidential race.
The development comes amid worsening internal divisions within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), as reconciliation efforts between governors and the camp loyal to Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike appear to have stalled.
Earlier, Makinde and Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed held a closed-door meeting with Dickson in Bauchi before proceeding to Kano for the broader engagement with Kwankwaso and Obi.
Party tensions escalated further as the Wike-backed faction accused the governors’ camp of attempting to disrupt the PDP’s forthcoming national convention, scheduled for March 29 and 30. The allegation was, however, dismissed by the rival bloc, which insisted it remains committed to reconciliation.
The PDP has been grappling with a prolonged leadership crisis that has split the party into opposing factions, following disputes over its national convention and leadership structure. Recent court rulings invalidating an earlier convention have further complicated efforts to restore unity.
Despite renewed calls for dialogue, both camps continue to trade accusations, raising concerns over the party’s cohesion ahead of 2027.
