Police in Enugu State have detained 24-year-old Desmond Ugwu for allegedly attempting to murder and rape a 30-year-old pregnant woman in Affa community, Udi Local Government Area.
According to a statement by the Command’s spokesman, SP Daniel Ndukwe, the victim was attacked on March 14 while walking home along a familiar, quiet track in Amokwo-Affa. “The suspect, armed with a cutlass, attacked her from behind, tried to strangle her, and dragged her into an uncompleted building where he allegedly raped her,” Ndukwe said.
The victim reported the incident at 6:15 a.m. on March 15, prompting swift action by the Affa Police Division. The suspect was promptly arrested, and the scene was processed, yielding a cutlass and clothing bearing suspected blood and seminal stains.
“The suspect has confessed, and the Commissioner of Police, Mr Mamman Giwa, has ordered a thorough investigation,” Ndukwe added. The victim has received medical attention, and the suspect will be arraigned in court upon conclusion of investigations.
The police commissioner described the attack as “deeply disturbing and unacceptable,” urging residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities to prevent similar tragedies.
