Benin City has secured a $1 million innovation award after emerging among the top cities in the Bloomberg Mayor’s Challenge.

The global contest attracted more than 600 cities, with only 25 cities from 20 countries making the final list. Benin City was also among four African cities that reached the final stage.

The award recognises cities that develop bold and practical solutions to urban challenges aimed at improving the lives of residents.

In a statement issued by the Chief Press Secretary to the Edo State governor, Patrick Ebojele, the recognition was described as a significant milestone that places Benin City on the global map of innovation and urban leadership.

Governor Monday Okpebholo said the award reflects the state government’s commitment to innovation and improved healthcare delivery.

“This recognition is a testament to innovation, resilience and the unwavering commitment of our team to transform healthcare delivery in Edo State. It reinforces that bold ideas from Benin City can compete and win on the global stage,” the governor said.

He congratulated the Edo State Ministry of Health and the team behind the initiative, noting that the achievement highlights the state’s growing reputation for forward-thinking governance and impactful public sector reforms.

Okpebholo also thanked residents of Edo State for their continued support for the administration’s programmes aimed at improving the welfare of citizens.

“Congratulations to my hardworking team and to the great people of Edo State. The world is watching, and we are just getting started,” he added.

The Bloomberg Mayor’s Challenge is regarded as one of the most competitive global platforms for cities to present innovative solutions to urban problems. Winning cities receive financial support and technical assistance to implement their ideas.
