Former Super Eagles vice-captain William Troost-Ekong has announced his retirement from international football, bringing an end to a distinguished career with Nigeria.
Troost-Ekong, who earned 83 caps, won three medals, and featured in five major tournaments, confirmed he will no longer represent the Super Eagles. His decision also means he will not be available for Nigeria at the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.
In a message to fans, Troost-Ekong expressed gratitude for the privilege of wearing the green-white-green, noting that the national team will always remain close to his heart.
William Troost-Ekong was born in 1993 and grew up in the Netherlands before choosing to play for Nigeria, his father’s homeland.
He represented the country at youth levels before earning his senior debut in 2015.
Known for his leadership and commanding defensive style, Troost-Ekong formed one of Nigeria’s most dependable centre-back pairings in recent years.

Playing a key defensive role at the 2016 Olympic Games, where Nigeria won the bronze medal.
Featuring in the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia.
Helping Nigeria reach the 2019 AFCON semifinals and contributing to the 2023 AFCON campaign.
Serving as vice-captain of the Super Eagles for several years.
At club level, Ekong has played in England, Italy, Turkey, and Greece, earning respect for his discipline on and off the pitch.
His retirement marks the exit of one of the Super Eagles’ most consistent modern-day defenders, leaving behind a legacy of commitment, leadership, and service to Nigerian football.
