Convicted leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, has been transferred from the Department of State Services (DSS) detention facility in Abuja to the Sokoto Correctional Centre following his sentencing.
Story:
Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra, has been relocated to the Sokoto Correctional Centre after his conviction and sentencing by the Federal High Court in Abuja.
Kanu was on Thursday, November 20, found guilty on all seven terrorism-related charges brought against him by the Federal Government. Justice James Omotosho, who presided over the case, sentenced him to life imprisonment.
His conviction marks the climax of a trial that restarted in 2021 after his controversial rendition from Kenya. Until Thursday’s judgment, Kanu had remained in DSS custody throughout the proceedings.
Justice Omotosho ruled out Kuje Prison as unsuitable, recommending instead that Kanu be kept in a more secure and “convenient” custodial facility due to security concerns and the sensitive nature of his case.
Kanu’s transfer to Sokoto was confirmed in a statement by Hon. Obinna Aguocha, member representing Ikwuano/Umuahia North/Umuahia South Federal Constituency. Aguocha urged supporters to remain calm and continue praying for the detained separatist leader.
