President Bola Tinubu has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of Olusegun Awolowo, grandson of the late nationalist and statesman, Chief Obafemi Awolowo. Segun Awolowo, a lawyer and former Executive Director of the Nigerian Export Promotion Council (NEPC), died at the age of 62.
In a statement issued on Wednesday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu described Awolowo’s death as “unfortunate and a tragic loss not only to the Awolowo family, but also to the entire country.”
The President praised the late Awolowo for upholding the legacy and values of the Awolowo dynasty, noting that he distinguished himself in character, public service, and professional contributions.
“Segun exemplified the Awolowo pedigree in appearance, character and demeanour. Like his grandfather, he was a lawyer committed to defending truth and justice,” the President said.
Tinubu highlighted Awolowo’s achievements during his eight-year tenure as Executive Director of NEPC between 2013 and 2021, where he became the longest-serving head of the agency. He lauded his contributions to national development and economic growth.
The President extended his condolences to Awolowo’s wife and children, his mother, Sisi Abah Folawiyo, and the entire Awolowo family. He also sympathised with the government and people of Ogun State, the South-West region, and Nigerians at large.
“May his soul rest in peace,” President Tinubu prayed.
