Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has criticised the Federal Government for allegedly aiding the destruction of democracy by undermining opposition parties while the country faces deepening insecurity.

Obi, reacting to a wave of terror attacks in Kwara and Kebbi states and the killing of a one-star General by ISWAP fighters in Borno, said the government’s priorities are misplaced. He described the administration’s posture as insensitive, noting that Nigeria is overwhelmed by insecurity.

He questioned why the government and its agents are focused on destabilising opposition parties at a time when the nation requires unity to confront rising security threats.

Writing on his X handle, Obi said, “A few weeks ago, when President Trump described our country as ‘now disgraced,’ many were outraged. Yet, how can we dispute it when, within a single week, 25 people were kidnapped and one of our generals and other officers were killed? Today, we witness another troubling terror attack in Kwara State. Rather than uniting in this critical moment, we are consumed by internal wrangling, party squabbles, and distractions.”

He accused the government of deliberately engineering crises within the PDP, Labour Party, SDP and other political groups, instead of fostering stability.

Obi recalled that during President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua’s administration, every political party—opposition or ruling—was protected from destabilisation, noting that such principles are essential for democracy.

“What we witness today is the opposite,” he said. “The current government seems more intent on weakening parties than strengthening our democracy.”

He added that in true democratic societies, opposition voices are respected and governance is inclusive.

The statement was signed by Ibrahim Umar, POMR spokesperson, on November 20, 2025.
