Tension gripped Akungba-Akoko in Akoko South-West Local Government Area of Ondo State after a fatal truck accident claimed eight lives on Wednesday night.
The crash, which occurred opposite the Anglican Church near Adekunle Ajasin University (AAUA), happened when the driver of a speeding truck reportedly lost control and rammed into bystanders. Among the victims were a pregnant woman and a 200-level student of the university.
The Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Mr. Samuel Ibitoye, confirmed that eight people—five men, two women, and a child—died in the accident. He blamed the crash on reckless driving, noting that the truck veered off its lane before hitting pedestrians.
In the aftermath of the tragedy, angry residents blocked major roads on Thursday, halting traffic in and out of the town. They demanded immediate government intervention to prevent further accidents.
A resident, Mrs. Bimpe Adeleke, lamented the recurring incidents. “This is not the first time. People are dying unnecessarily. The government must act fast,” she said.
Security operatives led by the Commissioner of Police, CP Adebowale Lawal, were deployed to restore calm and clear the wreckage as of press time.
