The military-led governments of Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso have formally withdrawn from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).
In a statement released by the ECOWAS Commission on Wednesday, it was confirmed that “the withdrawal of Burkina Faso, the Republic of Mali, and the Republic of Niger from ECOWAS has become effective as of 29th January 2025.”
ECOWAS assured that passports and identity cards bearing its logo will still be accepted for travel within the region. Trade and economic activities will continue under the ECOWAS Trade Liberalisation Scheme, ensuring that goods and services from the three countries can still circulate freely.
Additionally, citizens of these countries will maintain their right to visa-free movement, residence, and establishment within the region, in line with ECOWAS protocols, until further notice.
The statement also called on member states to continue supporting ECOWAS officials from the three countries in their work within the community.
“These arrangements will remain in effect until the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government determines the future terms of engagement with the three countries,” the statement concluded.
