The Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) has been thrown into mourning following the death of the union chairmen in Ika South and Ika North-East Local Government Areas of Delta State in a fatal road accident.
The deceased, Comrades Emmanuel Nwanma and Nnamdi Memeh, reportedly died in the crash on Monday, July 21, 2026. The cause of the accident had yet to be determined as of the time of filing this report.
Their deaths have sparked widespread grief across the Ika nation, local government councils and the labour movement in Delta State.
Reacting to the tragedy, Chairman of Ika North-East Local Government Area, Hon. Hunkamma Monday Odigwe, described the death of Comrade Memeh as a monumental loss to the council and the local government workforce.
In a condolence message, Odigwe said Memeh was a dedicated union leader whose guiding philosophy was “The Workers First,” adding that they had built a productive working relationship that benefited workers and the council.
He prayed for the peaceful repose of the souls of the two labour leaders.
Also mourning the loss, Chairman of Ika South Local Government Area, Jerry Ehiwarior, described Comrade Nwanma as a committed labour leader who championed workers’ welfare and promoted industrial harmony.
In a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Jonathan Onwuka, Ehiwarior said the late union chairman was calm, dependable and selfless, always placing the interests of workers above personal gain while fostering peace and dialogue.
He noted that Nwanma’s death had left a painful void, describing him as a dependable partner to the council and a courageous representative of local government workers.
The council chairman extended condolences to the bereaved families, NULGE members, council staff and associates of the deceased, praying for God to grant them eternal rest and comfort those affected by the tragedy.
