The Edo State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has strongly condemned the recent sacking of civil servants by the newly inaugurated Governor, Monday Okpebholo. The dismissals, which occurred yesterday, have left many workers in uncertain circumstances, exacerbating the hardships faced by families and dependents already struggling with the country’s economic challenges. The PDP blames the mismanagement of the national economy by the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led federal government for the worsening conditions.
PDP spokesman, Chris Osa Nehikhare, called the move “callous, reckless, and unjust,” warning that it may signal a troubling start to the new administration. The party’s condemnation has been echoed by various stakeholders in the state, including civil servants, labour unions, civil society groups, and non-governmental organizations, all of whom have criticized the governor’s actions as inhumane and insensitive.
“This is totally condemnable and unacceptable,” Nehikhare said. “How can a governor begin his term by sacking workers within 24 hours of taking office? This rash action is an outright assault on Edo workers and the people of the state, and we condemn it in the strongest terms. It’s a throwback to the dark days of military rule when new leaders would dismiss civil servants with immediate effect, using phrases like ‘with automatic alacrity.’”
Neihikhare questioned whether this is just the beginning of harsh and inhumane policies from the Okpebholo administration. He expressed concern that the governor’s first day in office, which has already brought hardship to many families, may signal further distress for Edo citizens.
