President Bola Tinubu has approved a salary increase of between 30 and 80 per cent for members of the Nigerian Armed Forces, in a move aimed at improving troop welfare and boosting morale amid ongoing security operations across the country.
The new salary structure, which takes effect from September 1, 2026, will benefit about 250,000 military personnel serving in various ranks.
According to a statement issued on Tuesday by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, officers above the rank of Colonel—including Brigadier-Generals, Major-Generals, Lieutenant Generals and Generals—will receive a 30 per cent salary increase.
Personnel from Colonel to Warrant Officer will enjoy a 50 per cent increase, while those from Private to Staff Sergeant will receive the highest adjustment of 80 per cent.
The salary review is expected to increase the Federal Government’s annual wage bill for the armed forces from N660 billion to N924 billion.
President Tinubu said the approval reflects his administration’s appreciation of the sacrifices made by members of the armed forces in combating banditry, kidnapping, terrorism and other security threats across the country.
“The men and women who help to keep us safe in our homes must be supported and appreciated in the course of their duties to our nation,” the President said.
He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to prioritising the welfare of military personnel while continuing efforts to modernise the armed forces through the provision of advanced weapons and technological equipment.
Tinubu stressed that national security remains a critical pillar of development, noting that no country can achieve lasting greatness without guaranteeing the safety of its citizens.
He added that the Federal Government would continue to deploy all available military and law enforcement resources to eliminate security threats and protect lives and property nationwide.
The President also urged members of the armed forces to regard the salary increase as a demonstration of the nation’s gratitude for their dedication and service.
“I urge our servicemen to take our gesture as a sign of our deep appreciation of the services they render to our fatherland. Together we shall prevail over the enemies intent on destroying the fabric of our nation,” he said.
