Arsenal came from behind to defeat Leeds United 2-1 at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday, with substitute Bruno Guimarães scoring the decisive goal to help the Premier League champions return to winning ways.

Leeds took a second-half lead through James Justin, but goals from Riccardo Calafiori and Guimarães within eight minutes secured all three points for Mikel Arteta’s side.

The victory helped Arsenal recover from their 3-0 defeat to Brighton and Hove Albion before the international break, while Leeds suffered their first Premier League loss of the season.

Leeds began the encounter with confidence, frustrating the hosts with disciplined defending and threatening on the counterattack.

Although Arsenal enjoyed possession, they struggled to create clear-cut chances against Daniel Farke’s well-organised side.

Goalkeeper David Raya was called into action several times as Leeds threatened to take the lead, while Arsenal’s attacking players found it difficult to break through the visitors’ defensive lines.

The first half ended goalless, with Leeds having arguably produced the more threatening performance.

The visitors’ persistence paid off in the 55th minute when Justin finished from close range after connecting with a cross from Gabriel Gudmundsson.

The goal rewarded Leeds for their strong performance and put Arsenal under pressure as they sought to avoid another disappointing result.

However, Arsenal responded seven minutes later when Calafiori equalised from close range after Noni Madueke’s delivery was played across the penalty area by Ben White.

The equaliser changed the momentum of the match, with Arsenal growing in confidence and increasing the pressure on the Leeds defence.

Arteta subsequently introduced Guimarães, Viktor Gyökeres and Jurriën Timber in a triple substitution aimed at strengthening his side’s attacking threat.

The changes quickly paid off as Guimarães put Arsenal ahead in the 70th minute, firing a low shot into the bottom corner after receiving the ball from Declan Rice, whose clever flick created the opportunity.

The Brazilian midfielder’s goal completed Arsenal’s comeback and gave the hosts the advantage for the first time in the match.

Arsenal continued to push for a third goal, with captain Martin Ødegaard missing a close-range opportunity, while Leeds goalkeeper James Trafford made important interventions to keep his side in contention.

Bukayo Saka also missed a late chance to extend Arsenal’s lead after breaking through on goal during stoppage time.

Despite the missed opportunities, Arsenal held on to secure a crucial victory and return to winning ways in the Premier League.

The result ended Leeds’ unbeaten league start and strengthened Arsenal’s position in the title race, as the Gunners moved level on points with Manchester City at the top of the table.

For Leeds, the defeat was a setback after an impressive performance, although their display demonstrated their ability to compete against the league’s leading sides.
