Manchester United squandered a late lead to draw 1-1 with Tottenham Hotspur at Old Trafford on Saturday after Dominic Solanke scored a stoppage-time equaliser for the visitors, who were reduced to 10 men.

United appeared on course for a crucial Premier League victory after Bryan Mbeumo broke the deadlock in the 73rd minute. However, Tottenham fought back to earn a valuable point despite Rodrigo Bentancur’s dismissal in the closing stages.

Tottenham started the encounter brightly and created several opportunities but struggled to convert their chances into goals.

Dominic Solanke missed opportunities to put the visitors ahead, while other attacking efforts from the London side failed to beat United goalkeeper Senne Lammens.

Manchester United also threatened, but neither team managed to score before the interval.

The hosts eventually took the lead in the 73rd minute when Mbeumo combined with Matheus Cunha inside the penalty area before turning sharply and firing a low shot past Tottenham goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky.

United’s advantage appeared to give them control of the contest, but the game took another turn when Bentancur was sent off in the 78th minute for violent conduct following an incident involving Luke Shaw.

The dismissal appeared to give Manchester United a significant advantage, with Tottenham forced to continue the contest with 10 players.

However, Spurs refused to surrender and continued to push forward in search of an equaliser.

Their persistence paid off in the 92nd minute when Sandro Tonali delivered a cross into the penalty area and Solanke glanced a header into the net to level the score at 1-1.

The late goal stunned the home crowd and denied United a much-needed victory, leaving the hosts frustrated after failing to capitalise on their numerical advantage.

The result added to Manchester United’s difficulties in the Premier League, while Tottenham salvaged a point despite their numerical disadvantage.

Both teams will now look to improve their performances as the Premier League campaign continues.
